1/4 cup butter
1 onion, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
3 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup half-and-half
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or the seeds from 1/2 a vanilla bean
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
